Daily QT: 08/15/2007 Mark 5:35-36

35While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"
36Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."

We have had a lot of discussions about hope and faith in our bible study group. Death would seem to be the absolutely hope killer - yet Jesus instructs the father to believe and have hope in him.
Nothing is impossible for the Lord. Did the father even dare to hope for the great miracle that was to come? Or was that beyond his imagination?

I chose to only post these two verses for today, because I thought them powerful enough to meditate on for the entire day and more. "Don't be afraid. Just believe." Oh, if we could only engrave those words into our hearts and truly believe them always.

Death is the ultimate equalizing force in life. Better to accept the finality of it all than to try (in vain and more pain) to do something about this final pronouncement. Such is the wisdom of the world, and it makes so much sense to me. Yet Jesus tells me today, "[d]on't be afraid, just believe." How foolish and crazy sounding that is.. Indeed often the wisdom of God is the foolishness in the eyes of the world. Me being the earthly person today am appalled at wut Jesus is saying here. Yet I know that Jesus overcame death, He took out the sting that even this final pronouncement could be a source of hope, the hope of heaven. Lord, I pray that you will take me from this earthly frame of mind today, and open my eyes that I may stand enraptured by the Supremacy of your being. You hold the universe with Your Word. You are the Lord of Lords, You are the creator and the ruler of all things. And You overcame death! Help me live in the reality of Your presence and being. Amen.

i can't agree with woos more. perhaps it cuz of the sermon 2 sundays ago....the inevitability of death...how solomon wrote in ecclesiastes that everything's meaningless cuz all will end, that all come to death, the great equalizer...so wut's the point of toiling under the sun if at the end all turn to not???

but JC here speaks out against the fear and despair and resignation death creates. He says dont be afraid. just believe. 2000 years before phil knight came up with just do it, JC said just believe...have hope.

if death were the end, then what would hope do, what would hoping be for if in the end all comes to the same great equalizer? but He's overcome death, and hope has a tangible place in our lives...beyond this life we lead.
