Daily QT 08/23/2007 Mark 6:32-34

32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things

I love that line: "he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd."

That is what we are like. That is what the world is like. People just milling around, lost, direction less, confused - and too dumb to realize how truly lost we are. :-)

But these sheep were smart enough to search for Jesus. They recognized his authority and instinctively knew that he was their shepherd. It is not a sin to be weak. To acknowledge our weakness and to reach out to God for help is the way toward grace, strength, wisdom and peace.

I am so moved by verse 34, too. I realize that my Lord and Savior altogether had a very different reaction when He saw the great multitude of people that had followed Him. As you well know, my reaction to the whatever equivalent of this "crowd" would have been one of deep annoyance and at times even repugnance. People are so unlovable, and I am often met with the stark reality that there is absolutely nothing within me that enables me to love. Like everything else, the source, strength and courage for compassion and love comes from God.

Jesus saw these people, and saw them as sheep without a shepherd. I reexamine my heart today, and ask myself what this crowd means to me.
Jesus had compassion on me. Who am I to think and judge any otherwise. Lord, help me be like you as I see annoying peoples in life. Amen.

32(A)They went away in (B)the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. 34When Jesus went ashore, He (C)saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because (D)they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:32-34)

The following verse is interesting: ..."and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities." We should think about whether we truly recognize Christ as our Lord and Savior or just as someone who provides my needs and gives me protection during hardships. It's truly important that we run toward Him with passion and love, however, we should always think about our true motives and reasons. Further, these verse tell us how much sympathy and care Christ has for us. It says in verse 34:"He felt compassion for them because (D)they were like sheep without a shepherd." Jesus really looks out for us every moment, just as a shepherd looks out for his sheep.

i keep wondering what distance this crowd must've covered. i mean JC and his crew went ahead on a boat...did they just go a short distance, or a long distance beyond the sight of the horizon? either way this crowd had passion, determination and desire to see/meet JC.

am i willing to keep my eyes on Him and run all the way around the lake to greet Him?

Yes I was once sheep without a shepherd and through God's grace I was able to recognize Jesus as my shepherd. I pray to have compassion like Jesus so that I'll be able to help other lost sheep to our shepherd.
