Daily QT: 08/19/2007 Mark 6:14-16

14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." 15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"

I think Herod was haunted by his role in John's death. I imagine that he saw and heard John everywhere. That everything reminded him of the great sin he had committed in killing a righteous man. I imagine that Pontius Pilate would have been haunted in a similar way by Jesus' execution.

I am reminded of Lady MacBeth and her inability to wash blood from her hands: "Here's the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little
hand." I truly believe that sin weighs us down; becoming an intolerable burden that grows, crushes and deforms our souls.

Only Jesus can wipe the blood from our hands. Only Jesus can lighten our load. Because of Jesus we can learn to walk upright again.
