Daily QT: 08/11/2007 Mark 5:18-20
18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[c]how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

These verses remind me that there are many ways to serve Jesus. This man thought the best way to serve Jesus was to physically follow him, but Jesus had other plans for him. I know some Christians who feel guilty for not being missionaries, but that is not the only way to serve God or spread the gospel. God gives us all different talents and calls us to different tasks. All parts of His body are valued and cherished.
Sometimes, I have to remind myself to look more closely at my motivations - especially when I am doing something "good." Am I doing it out of a pure love for God or merely to get glory for myself? What is He calling me to do? How often my own ego has prevented me from fully hearing His will! How often have I felt ready to do something, when I really wasn't. And how often have I thought myself not qualified, even though God was letting me know that in His eyes I was.
This passage gives an energetic "new" Christian like me a better appreciation for why Paul advised Timothy as follows (1 Timothy 3:6):
"He [someone wanting to be a Christian leader] must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgement as the devil."
