Daily QT: 08/29/2007 Mark 7:1-4
1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were "unclean," that is, unwashed. 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.

Why do we people have to make everything so complicated? Seriously, look at governments, bureaucracies, politics, organized religions, anything!
I think the root of it may be each person's sinful desire to take the place of God. We feel the desire to exert our control over others. Why can't everyone else do it our way? Therefore human beings try to regulate everything and so lose sight of what is really important.
i agree wholeheartedly with sue. eating's the important part. hahahahaha.
on a more serious note, above post reminded me of what our pastor said a couple of weeks ago - we play many games (tennis, monopoly, dating, tag, whatever), but one game that we all play is playing god. it goes beyond trying to exert control over others. it's pushing God out of His rightful place in our lives and pretty much declaring that we know better than He does, and that we can do better than He can....
of course this passage could be about how a lot of us go through the motions of worship - singing praise songs, reading the Bible, closing our eyes bringing our hands and bowing our heads to pray - without truly worshipping God...without our hearts in it. but i think even that comes from our sense of wanting to play god ourselves.
1(A)The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem, 2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)impure hands, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)traditions of the elders; 4and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.)
Wow, these are some great thoughts and meditations from both Suejin and Daniel....Also, by reading these verses, I ask myself the question, "what is it that makes God really happy about me?" As aformentioned by others, we can easily act holy and perform all the acts of holy worship without TRULY worshipping God. I believe that the one thing God looks at is our heart of obedience with a renewed mind and spirit each day, rather than repeating the same meaningless ritual every day.
Wow great posts everyone and I totally agree. We can definitely try to act holy and perhaps succeed but like EBSFellow said, it is when we worship God makes him happy. This isn't about us alone doing what God has told but doing so together with God.
