Daily QT: 08/24/2007 Mark 6:35-37

35By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. 36Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
37But he answered, "You give them something to eat."
They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?

This speaks to me on so many levels. I guess I'll write about the most literal level that struck me first.

These verses actually made me laugh. The disciples' reactions were just so true and human. I think most human beings want to help others - as long as it doesn't entail any real sacrifice on the givers' part - as long as it doesn't hit our pocketbooks.

We have been conditioned to equate money with security. Yet most people who worry about money, never feel they have enough, never feel secure. Do we really have faith that God will provide for our needs - or do we rely on money, talent, intelligence, hard work? I'm not denigrating these things. They are good things - as long as they do not become false idols and take the place of God.
