Daily QT: 08/16/2007 Mark 5:37-43

37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep." 40But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" ). 42Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except (A)Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the (B)synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep." They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, (C)I say to you, get up!"). Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. And He (D)gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat. (Mark 5:37-43)

As I read these verses, there are two thoughts that come to my mind:
1.) The way we perceive and look at tragedy/hardship is different from how Jesus looks at it. In verse 39, Jesus says, "the child has not died, but is asleep." Clearly, Jesus knows that the child is physically dead, but He looks beyond our lives on this earth. We should remember that our lives on this earth only lasts temporary, and hence, Jesus does not want us to get bogged down too much on worldly things. Rather, He wants us to see our lives with a peaceful mind, which we can only attain through an intimate relationship with Him.
2.) According to verse 40, it says that "they began laughing at Him." It's quite sad to see how people mock at Jesus, as He assures them that the child has not died. It is very pitiful to see how faithless we can be during important moments in our lives. We claim to know Him and we keep saying that He is the true Messiah and omnipotent God of this world. Howerver, we should think about how sincere and real our faith is toward God, especially during clutch moments in our lives.
3.) I think that verse 41 is a powerful verse: "41Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, (C)I say to you, get up!")." I feel that our daily lives can be compared to the life of a paralytic who cannot walk and is tied to a rollchair. Christ says "Talitha kum! to each one of us every day, and He expects us to respond to His calling.

What struck me was that Jesus told them to feed the girl after awakening her from the dead. Unlike the people around him, he didn't forget the basic needs of the girl - such as food. Jesus takes care of us in big and small ways - spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, physically. I am reminded that he will physically resurrect us from the dead. As a child, I used to think that just our souls would go to heaven. Now I realize that Jesus heals us fully.
