The Book of Mark
Chapter 2 (NIV)
13Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

I love the fact that Jesus saw right away that Levi was a tax collector - the most hateful traitorous brown-nosers of the time - and publicly called out for him to follow.
Jesus sees beyond labels. His judgments are not based upon societal values. He sees beyond the physical realities. He sees us better than we see ourselves. What would he say to me if he saw me in a crowd?
As I think about verse 13, I'm distinctly reminded of Psalm 23:1-3 -- Jesus (the shepherd) has led people (his sheep) by the lake (still waters) and he teaches them (restores their souls and guides them in paths of righteousness). The rest of Psalm 23 will be reflected in Levi's life thanks to Jesus' call to him.
