The Book of Mark
Chapter 1

29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

When Jesus saves us or heals us, He doesn't just do it for us. We are then to be of service to others. I think part of the reason I put off truly committing to God for so many years was that I was afraid of what that kind of commitment would require of me. All those years of questioning was a wonderful luxury, because I could think theoretically about God and myself and sometimes the world. Now I am called to be of practical service to others.

I pray that as I grow and mature as a Christian, God will reveal to me how I can best be of service to him.

P.S. I loved catching up on all of the comments this week. Again, I let QT slip past me for a couple of days - but tonight I was blessed to finally read through all the comments and meditate on them. I am learning so much from dissecting a few verses at a time with all of you. Thank you for your commitment. You call on me to strengthen my commitment as well.

I'm a little confused about who "they" refers to in verse 29. In fact, I'm now wondering about the use of "they" in verses 22 and 27 as well as "their" in verse 23.

But what strikes me once again is the timing of everything, especially the immediacy of events. Starting from verse 16, I notice that we are getting a play-by-play account of Jesus' activities. What an incredibly exciting gift for us to have 2000 years later -- I mean, it's as close to video coverage as you can get. And if I recall correctly, it mentions in "The Case for Christ" that this type of eyewitness account was a completely unique writing approach for that time period which supports the credibility of what was being recorded.

Baptized, prayed alone in the desert while fasting and hearing God's words, went out to gather people, taught them, and now started to heal people.

I never really examined the steps or processes in which Jesus took in the last few years of his life. As we talked about earlier in our group, it is very important to hear and study God's words and keeping up the prayers before, while, and after going in to the world to serve others.

Although this isn't directly related to this very verse, it just hit me today after reading this that even Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ prayed every morning and night. Who am I to think that I can go in to the world without prayers and expect to win?

I am also one of the people that was healed by Jesus and I should keep that in mind everyday.

And immediately after they came (Z)out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she [d]waited on them. (Mark 1:29-31 NASB)

For some reason, I just keep thinking about how frustrating it must have been for Jesus to listen to people who wanted to see more wonders and miracles. We should remember that the essence of Christianity for us is to have an initimate relationship with Christ, not to look and long for the good things that Christ will do in our lives... Though 2000 years have passed by since Jesus' ministry, I am comforted at the fact that He still teaches me through direct communication with Him in prayer , His word, and through the interaction and help of the Holy Spirit in my daily life. Though I am a wicked sinner, I really pray that God has mercy on me.
