The Book of Mark
Chapter 2 (NIV)
23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"
25He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions."
27Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." (Mark 2:23-28)
As I read these verses, they remind me of other verses in Romans: 21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:21-23.
These verses tell us that our belief in Jesus Christ given to us by His grace through His redemtion on the cross, has helped us to become children of righteousness. Jesus Christ Himself replaced the law by becoming the ultimate law for mankind...As we can see in today's verses, the pharisees and the high priests are very tied up and bound to their law, not willing to change. There are old patches of garments within us that have to replaced through the grace of God. How much am I willing to let Christ into my life so that He can mold me and change me according to His desires?
Amen, my Christian brothers and sisters: Please keep the following prayer requests in mind: 1. Pray & give strength and resolve to the Korean hostages that are being held in Afghanistan 2. Pray that VOPC church will be able to come up with a vision statement and be guided in the right direction
amen. let's pray all together
The verse that popped out to me was 27: . . . 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'
I think often times, people feel resentful of God and his laws. They feel like He's cramping their style - making arbitrary rules that limit our fun. In fact, these laws are made with us in mind. God wants us to be happy and fulfilled and He knows better than us how we can achieve that. He commanded us to keep the Sabbath holy, because He understood that we need a day of rest. We need to replenish ourselves physically and spiritually - and that by honoring God, our lives take on greater meaning and we become more fulfilled.
The Pharisees lost sight of the Spirit of the laws. So much so that they couldn't see God in front of them. I pray for wisdom even more than righteousness. For often times, pursuit of righteousness just leads to vanity and hardness in my heart.
