The Book of Mark
Chapter 1 (NIV)

14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

I imagine that John also said those exact same words. And that Jesus' apostles also said those exact same words. Just as we could say those exact same words. I sometimes forget the immediacy of the gospel. I think I would spend my days differently if I just said those 3 sentences to myself every morning.

As we get older, our appreciation for the adage "timing is everything" only increases, especially as we become more mature in our faith and are able to more fully understand and realize what God has planned for each of us. It's interesting to consider the role of timing in God's sending of Jesus. In verse 14, we see how God has used John to pave the way for Jesus' preaching. We cannot control when (or even how) God chooses to employ us but by His grace we are in daily control of whether we are committing to live for His glory. In verse 15, we hear Jesus' weighty proclamation that the kingdom of God is "near" (NIV) and "at hand" (NKJV, NASU). Again, we cannot control when God will bring judgement on us which makes it even more critical that we act upon the advice He is so lovingly giving to us.
