I'm always fascinated when I notice some sort of emotional "response" from God or Jesus. In this case, NIV translates Jesus as talking "sternly" while NKJV and NASU interpret Jesus as having "rebuked him." Either way, it seems like such an understatement. It's one thing to be put in your place by someone like your mother or father, or teacher, or boss. But it's something else entirely when it's Jesus who's doing the talking.
The evil spirit didn't want to leave - he shook the man violently and came out with a shriek - but the spirit had no choice. God could impose his will upon us just as easily. We have the freedom of choice through His grace alone.
