55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.' " 59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
62"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

We can see how the chief priests and others desperately try to bring false testimonies about Jesus, so that they can finally put Him to death. They probably look at Jesus with hatred and envy, since many crowds have followed and believed in Him. Nevertheless, we can see how patient and calm our Lord is despite all the untrue accusations. He has pity and a forgiving heart with them, although He could have turned the table on many occasions. ... "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God...This is the message that still echoes in my heart as I read these verses. If these chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were pure in their heart, then they would be able to see the power of God, displayed through Jesus. Unfortunately however, they were filled with jealousy and rage, so that they lost all the pureness for God....
to me, this 2,000 year old "trial" situation continues being played out over and over in all of our lives today. it happens every time i hear someone somewhere commenting/criticizing/testing/attacking/questioning Christianity. there's alot of confusing and conflicting information that folks, including many smart but unfortunately self-righteous ones, try to use as evidence against the credibility of Christ. ultimately, jesus' silence in this story is indicative of what any christian seeking the truth knows -- no finite set of man-made answers will satisfy all the critics, nay-sayers, and skeptics.
