Mark 14:53-54

53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders and teachers of the law came together. 54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire

Peter alone followed Jesus. I often hear/think about Peter disavowing Jesus three times, but I forget that at least he tried to follow. Peter had the desire and love for Jesus. He just became frightened when his life was threatened.

How strong is my desire/love for Jesus? How hard do I try to follow when I am merely inconvenienced?

here we see peter trying to hedge his bets by standing out in his support for Jesus (albeit from a physical distance) while at the same time fitting in with Jesus' captors by socializing at the firepit. peter is acting like someone who either is conflicted about his beliefs, lacks courage, or both. he cannot commit to being clearly FOR or AGAINST Jesus.

but again, aren't all of us just looking into the mirror here? we're always trying to find balance within our secular lives and we unwittingly try to apply this same paradigm in reconciling our spiritual needs within our secularly-driven priority framework. but if we are born again in Christ, we must be open to transformed our lives. so shouldn't we be reconciling our secular needs without our spiritually-driven priority framework?
