10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
Whenever I read this passage, I get reminded how fragile and inconsistent we are, though we constantly claim that we will give everything to Him to glorify Him. It is pretty sad to see this disciple of Christ choosing the world rather than sticking to Him until the end though he had been trained and guided by our Lord for the past three years. These verses show us that all of us have the potential to lose the sight of Christ in a matter of seconds/ minutes. We have to be spiritually awake and seek His mercy and love, if we truly desire to walk in Him every day.
3 years of sharing meals, traveling together, listening to his words... being with the living word and only savior Jesus Christ yet he still betrays him.
I still can't believe this happened and I want to dig in why and what led Judas to betray him. It really doesn't make sense that he would turn Jesus in for some money.
This reminds me of Mark 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despite the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
Was it the money that caused Judas' betrayal? Did he get sick of living in poverty while following Jesus? Did he dream of clean beds rather than dirt floors? Or did he betray Jesus for political/religious reasons without realizing he would be monetarily rewarded until after the betrayal? Was he blackmailed or threatened?
I want to make sense of it. I want to believe it was something else besides money. I can't imagine betraying one of my friends like this - especially not just for money. Can money corrupt that thoroughly? It makes me shudder.
