Mark 14:37-38

37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

I agree that at times my spirit is willing to "watch and pray," but the body is weak. It's especially more difficult to wake up early in the morning to pray, when the previous day has been rough and hectic....It's so difficult to pray even for ten minutes at times... Today's verses emphasize to us again the importance of prayer. It's very easy for us to fall into temptations to sin against God, if we stay away from communicating with Him on a daily basis...

I can see myself acting like Peter in this situation... not being able to even stay awake for 1hr. Our spirit is always telling us to keep awake but our body wants to sleep. The constant struggle of what our body wants vs. what our spirit wants will go on and I pray that I will listen and obey the Holy Spirit and fight the temptation my body wants to fall to.

the hard part is not necessarily staying vigilant for any particular 1 hour period. the hard part is staying vigilant for that next hour or the hour after that because eventually there will be an hour when your energy wanes and you let your guard down. we cannot take comfort in what we did the last hour. with each new hour jesus is asking us to be proactive in our watchful prayer if we are to prevail in our constant battles with sin.
