Genesis 4:25-26 (NIV)

25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, [i] saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on [j] the name of the LORD.

Does this mean that from the death of Abel to the birth of Seth, nobody called on the name of the Lord? Was all of humanity "hidden from the presence of the Lord?" (4:13).

Speaking of which, I'm still working out the full meaning of that verse. Adam and Eve and all their descendants were banished from the Garden of Eden, but it looked like they and their children were still able to communicate with the Lord directly. Therefore, Cain's murder then seemed to cause a further rift with our relationship with God. Therefore, it seems like the birth of Seth brought new hope for redemption, which is why people were able to call on the Lord again?

I just realized that the birth of sons also often represent new hope in the bible. Just as the father's sins are laid on the heads of the sons, the son may also bring grace and mercy for their father's (inherited) sins: Seth, Isaac, Noah, Jesus.

Cain committed a grave sin but he remained God-fearing. So at what point did ungodly people arise and from where?
On another line of thinking, Eve acknowledges that human life is a priceless gift from God. But who exactly is the true recipient of this incredible gift? Is it the person being born? His/her parents? Christians? All of mankind?
Also, what responsibilities come attached with this gift of life and on whom do they fall?
Finally, does the Bible say anything on the issue of adoption?

Interestingly the name Seth means anointed and Enosh means man. Almost like Seth restored the good and gave birth to man to amend what had happened to Abel.

What does it mean to call on the name of the Lord? Did the people refuse to call upon God? Pray to God? What does Seth's birth and birth of his son Enosh entail?

Like Sue Jin said, it may have given new hope. And as Sue Jin mentioned, it does seem that children of Adam still could have direct interaction with God.
The world has fallen so far apart from God. I hope to one day restore that closeness with God and be able to hear his voice directly.

To reply "golfer"'s comment, I'm not sure if the Bible mentions anything on adoption. Although Paul had an adopted son Timothy and their relationship seemed to be very Christ centered which is great.

I think the gift of a child is gift to parents as well as the child him/herself. The joy spread to Christians and all of mankind since having a child may bring glory to God.

The question of the Ungodly and Godly people is a mystery for me also at this point. It could simply mean that due to sin, men continued to farther themselves from God making them ungodly. In other words man began to act ungodly. Whoever still kept the relationship with God perhaps is considered Godly people.

We'll further meditate on this.

Great responses everyone!~
