Genesis 1:6-10 (NIV)
6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

These verses are very difficult to comprehend and imagine...It basically tells me that everything was covered with water initially, before God created an expanse (heaven)and separated it from the waters.... Water really does seem to have a very special meaning throughout the Bible. Water actually symbolizes death (flood) but also new life (baptism)for mankind... I like verse 10, which says that God created everything and saw that it was good. I am sure that's how He feels toward us, His creations. I think there is a purpose why God has put us to live on this earth and He rejoices just watching us...
What strikes me about the creation story is that it goes step-by-step. God didn't just snap his fingers and everything appeared right away. Rather there was a process, an evolution.
Throughout the Bible, God moves throughout history. He has more patience than us, because he can see the direction in which things are moving. When we become frustrated, we must remember that God has and has always had a plan.
"separated the water under the expanse from the water above it."
Some Christians believe from the above verse that there was a Water barrier/canopy surrounding the planet Earth.
This caused the sun's radiation to be bounced off and kept the Earth in an ideal state where the temperature of the Earth was warm throughout entire planet and never cold. Also that there was only one season.
Because of this water barrier/canopy, people in the beginning of Old Testament was able to live for very long time.
When the flood happened during Noah's time, this water barrier/canopy was broken (Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.)and poured into Earth causing a huge environmental changes which includes temperature changes, having multiple seasons, and of course the average human life span.
It is after the flood that people's life span significantly dropped.
Like Sue Jin said God telling his creation step-by-step is striking! This shows me that he really put his thought and care into making every single thing. And everything he said/created fit into his plan.
I'm comforted by the fact that God is invited us into his plan and his kingdom.
The seperation or "splitting" of waters is to achieve ocean and rain. It's a seperation or dividing of the waters so rain will fall on earth.
