Genesis 6:1-4 (NIV)
1 When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with [a] man forever, for he is mortal [b] ; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

In general, there are three primary views on the identity of the "sons of God". They could be (1) fallen angels, or(2) powerful human rulers, or (3)godly descendants of Seth intermarrying with wicked descendants of Cain...Regardless, God is not content with them and lowers their life expectancy. Interestingly, the Nephilim were a race of giants that were produced by the sexual union of the sons of God and the daughters of men. Translated from the Hebrew texts, "Nephilim" means "fallen ones." They were renowned for their strength, prowess, and a great capacity for sinfulness... Overall, I think this is the beginning of the fall of man and the flood is about to befall on them.
Nephilim has always been the mystery for me for quite some time now. It doesn't really make sense if it was fallen angel since that means demons can produce offspring with human which is weird. But the interesting thing is that the Nephilim were referred as giants.
"They were the heroes of old, men of renown." Despite the mix, it seems they were famous in their times. Perhaps their fame led them to become more arrogant and became more self centered straying farther from God.
