Daniel 5:22-31 (NIV)
22 "But you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. 25 "This is the inscription that was written: Mene , Mene , Tekel , Parsin 26 "This is what these words mean: Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. 27 Tekel : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. 28 Peres [h] : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. 29 Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom. 30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, [i] was slain, 31 and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.

It's quite sad and scary to see the abrupt end of King Belshazzar. It's sort of strange why God does not give him a second chance, as He does to many others in the Bible. But God is the decision maker and we are His tools, and we are not in the position to stand up against Him...
I too think it was an abrupt end of king's life. Perhaps he died because there weren't any repent made by the king, rather he rewards Daniel. Although I do find it interesting that the king is satisfied with Daniel's translation. If this king was still arrogant, he would've killed Daniel for speaking such nonsense to him. By rewarding Daniel I would think that this king knew what Daniel said was true...
And looking at the verse, "Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end" so this king's end was here.
The question I ask myself is that if I were in that room with king and Daniel, would I have been able to read and understand the writings on the wall?
What is God writing to us today?
