Daniel 3:21-25 (NIV)

21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king." 25 He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."

These three men did not waver, even as they were thrown into the furnace to die in an unquestionably horribly manner. But each of Jesus' disciples -- despite their first-hand relationship with the Son of God -- ended up succumbing to doubt out of fear at certain critical moments. This makes me wonder about what really drives the strength and stamina underlying one's hope, belief and ultimately faith in God.
By the way, I just want to let SJ know how much we all miss her and hope she's having a productive time up there!

Last Friday, we talked about Peter's bold confession to Christ: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Despite these words of faith and determination, Peter failed to hang on to his conviction until the end and denied Jesus three times...I think we shouldn't make empty promises to Christ, since we are frail and always break our commitments to Him. Rather than praying aloud and using praising words to lift Him up during our prayers, we should always sincerely re-examine our hearts and intentions towards God. As it's obvious, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego don't really talk much but their hearts are directed toward the Lord.
