Daily QT: 09/05/2007 Mark 8:4-10

4His disciples answered, "But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?"
5"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked.
"Seven," they replied.
6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9About four thousand men were present. And having sent them away, 10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

I love that Jesus gave thanks for those 7 loaves of bread. My reaction would have been, "That's it?! Dear God, what are we going to do?"

Jesus reminds us to be grateful for all that God gives us. Where I see deficiency, he sees bounty. I pray for a more grateful heart - wiser and more discerning.

Again, Jesus shows us that nothing is impossible through God.

I agree with Sue Jin regarding giving thanks for even 7 loaves of bread. No matter how small or big we think we have, we should always thank our Lord for he loves us dearly and always looks after us.

4And His disciples answered Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?"5And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."6And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people. 7They also had a few small fish; and (A)after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well. 8And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (B)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. 9About four thousand were there; and He sent them away. 10And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of (C)Dalmanutha. (Mark 8:4-10 - NASB)

Surely, by reading through passage, we keep remembering how our Lord Almighty fed the multitudes out of nothing....However, I want to look at the passage from a different angle. For example, looking at verse 4, it's almost astonishing to see the lack of faith of the disciples toward Jesus. Their reply is: "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?" I wonder how frustrating this reply must have been to Jesus, since these disciples already witnessed many miracles and wonders by Jesus. However, He nevertheless continues to work with His disciples and orders them to direct the people to sit down on the ground, in order to distribute the food. Here, we can see the mercy and grace of Christ toward us. Though we are always hesitant, make mistakes and have so many shortcomings, our Lord Jesus still covers these with His love and gives us new chances every day to make it up to Him. We should really thank Him every day for still using us as His tools of instruments though we are weak and always have a mind of doubt within us.
