28Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!"
29"I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

28(A)Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You." 29Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, (B)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake, 30but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (C)the age to come, eternal life. (Mark 10:28-30)
I think It's important to carefully think about these verses, since there could be people who misinterpret them and claim that it's not important to take care of family, possessions etc.... I personally think that taking care of one's family is one of the most important duty of all Christians. However, I understand these verses try to emphasize that life on this earth is insignificant compared to the new life in our eternal paradise with our Savior Jesus Christ. I believe and acknowledge that there is a sacrifice and even potential loss if we really want to follow Christ. Nevertheless, there is nothing more valuable than an intimate relationship with Jesus!
I have a problem with this verse and it has always bothered me for quite some time now.
God is definitely number one priority in our life and we should follow him.
Leaving the worldly things behind and following Jesus is definitely something everyone should want to do.
However I do keep asking myself what if the family members needed their(any of the diciples) help? Were their family saved? To me this can be interpreted as that they left to save themselves. Of course I totally agree with EBSFellow and I pray that others will take this verse that way...
I took these verses to mean that IF our family forces us to choose between the family and Jesus - we must choose Jesus. Remember, at this time Jesus and the Gospel were considered a dangerous cult by the rest of the Jewish community. Soon Christians would be persecuted for their faith in Jesus and the Gospel. They would be forced to choose between life here or the life hereafter.
