Daily QT: 09/11/2007 Mark 8:34-38

34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." (Mark 8:34-38-NIV)

34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (AH)take up his cross and follow Me. 35"For (AI)whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. 36"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37"For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38"For (AJ)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (AK)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (AL)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." (Mark 8:34-38 - NASB)

I get stuck by reading the following verse:"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (AH)take up his cross and follow Me." I ask myself: " why is our God such a jealous God who wants all our attention and love focused on Him? Why can we not love the world and follow Him? Why do we have to commit ourselves wholeheartedly to Christ, deny oneself and take up his/ her cross, in order to follow Him? Certainly, it's obvious that a Christian's life is a narrow path which we have to take very serious, if we truly wish to get closer to Him. I assume that we will be able to deny ourselves more and take up our cross more easily, as we earnestly seek to experience His love and care. I believe we have to focus and meditate on the cross every day, where our Lord and Savior shed His blood for countless many sinners like me.

Jesus' words fill my with terror. How often have I denied Jesus by refusing to speak up about him, because I was afraid of ridicule in this world? It's definitely not hip to be Christian. I pray that cherish Jesus more than the opinions of others.
