Still waters. Reminds me of the first verse we discussed. Still waters provide safety and nourishment but also peace and reflection. Still waters, not stagnant waters. What is the difference between being still and stagnant? I realized that I am so afraid of being still, filling my life with distractions, because I don't want to be stagnant. I have realized a busy life is not synonomous with a meaningful or fulfilling life. I pray for balance and for peace, for wisdom and perspective. I pray that He leads me to still waters.
I interpret this verse as providing a specific example of how the first verse ought to play out in my life. Through God’s satiation of my every true need and want, I can live freely and joyfully without worry or guilt. For sheep, finding green pasture and still water is equivalent to visiting an all-you-can-eat-and-drink buffet. As our shepherd, God both forces (“makes us”) and encourages (“leads us”) us to think and act in ways vital for our well-being that we are incapable of doing on our own. Although I am constantly tempted by evil forces to gratify my self-indulgent nature, through God I can make decisions not dictated by my desires.
