I'm trying to figure out how the second verse ties into the first. The earth is the Lord's BECAUSE he founded it upon the seas and floods? When I think of floods, I think of the great flood, when God destroyed the earth except for Noah and all that was in the ark. Like a do-over. God was pained by the destruction (although He must have thought it necessary) and swore He would never do it again. So maybe the earth is the Lord's because not only did He create it, but He also sacrificed for it. And He promised not to have such another all consuming flood again - because even the destruction and resurrection of the world could not save it. Only the destruction (and resurrection) of His son could redeem it. So we belong to God because not only are we created by God, but we are also loved and redeemed by His flood of tears.
This is my initial reading/muddling through of these two verses. I'm interested to read what everyone else makes of these verses.
we are reminded here of God's ultimate ownership of everything we are and have. note that it doesn't say whether these things are good and bad.
from a scientific perspective, i find the reference here to the earth's origins interesting, especially the implication that there was water before there was land. this ties to both what is stated in genesis 1 and what is accepted scientific theory (water is needed for life). but i'm trying to figure out if there's a spiritual purpose for the water focus here -- waters, seas, rivers (NASB version).
okay, i just read suejin's thoughts and see we've basically got the same questions. fyi, i just noticed that that the new KJV does not use the word "floods."
