Jonah 1:9-13 (NIV)
9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"12 "Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you." 13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.

I wonder why these these men don't pick up Jonah and throw him into the sea, as he asks for. Instead, these men act against the will of God and try to row back to land and now struggle against the great sea storm. These scenes show how we can never turn and run away from God. We should remember that He controls the universe and all forces of nature. How dare we small creatures disobey Him and try to hide from Him? He knows every single details about each one of us, such as our innermost thoughts, desires and intentions etc. Instead of running away from Him, we should come forward and open up everything to Him, even the things that worry us and causes us to sin against Him.
Perhaps these men thought if they threw Jonah to the sea, they would get punished for killing a man that Jonah's God wants.
Nevertheless it is a comical scene for these men to try escape God.
