Jonah 1:14-17 (NIV)

14 Then they cried to the LORD, "O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased." 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.17 But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

Back in verse 5, it says that all the sailors are afraid and each cry out to "his own god." However, after throwing Jonah overboard, the raging sea grows calm and people suddenly greatly fear the Lord and offer Him sacrifices and make vows to Him. This is our typical fickle human nature. Even as Christians, we live each day covered with sins and lusts every day and seek different forms of gods that please us and give us comforts. But once something unexpected hits us, we immediately turn to God with fear and ask for His guidance and help. I sincerely pray that our hearts and passions toward our Lord will not change every minute, but remain steadfast and consistent.
