Genesis 15:1-5 (NIV)
1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, [a] your very great reward. [b] " 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit [c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

How encouraging the message must be to Abram, as he hears God telling him that He is his shield and reward. I think God is very pleased with Abram, since he remains loyal and faithful to Him, despite the temptations to go the easier way and to take the goods offered to him by Melchizedek. We can also see that God has a solution prepared to Abram's concern about his offsprings. The promise is overwhelming and more than one could really anticipate. This passage once again confirms to us that God really knows our most intimate worries and desires, and really helps us to realize them if they are in the line of His will.
It is interesting that Abram still says what is on his mind. The thing he longs for which is a son and how because of that his state of being. Shouldn't he be content with the blessing God poured out to him? What good is it to have an heir to take his belongings?
Nevertheless God hears him out and promises that Abram will have many offspring.
God clearly knows our desires and everything about us... our worries, concerns, etc. However He waits patiently for us to open up to Him.
