Genesis 20:16-18 (NIV)
16 To Sarah he said, "I am giving your brother a thousand shekels [a] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated." 17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so they could have children again, 18 for the LORD had closed up every womb in Abimelech's household because of Abraham's wife Sarah.

Though seemingly fragile many times throughout Genesis, Abraham actually does have the faith in prayers. This scene shows us the intimate relationship between God and Abraham, where the latter prays while the former replies...I feel very sorry for Abimelech and his household, since he got himself almost into big trouble though he hasn't done anything wrong. Without Abraham telling the truth, how could he have known that
Sarah was not his wife? But at the same time, I respect Abimelech how he immediately listens to God Almighty since he fears Him.
It's interesting that we can be sinning without even realizing it. I was also impressed by Abimelech. He took full responsibility and apologized/atoned. I was impressed he and God were able to talk and communicate in his dreams. There's something very significant about that.
I guess all this didn't happen within few days unless Amimelech and his household didn't know they could no longer have children.
I still don't like the approach to test? Abimelech's faith in God but perhaps and probably this was the best way to do so from God's perspective.
i wanted to say something insightful but sometimes i get stuck when i think too literally about what's happening. all i can say right now is that i'm struck once again by how different the OT and NT are in communicating to us.
