Joshua 6:26-27

26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: "Cursed before the LORD is the man who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
"At the cost of his firstborn son
will he lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
will he set up its gates."

27 So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

How terrible! Not only was the city destroyed and the people exterminated, but the very land was cursed forever.

I suppose that as deep and everlasting is His Grace, so is His Curse just as everlasting and binding.

I think people in the past had a better understanding and appreciation for curses. Words had power then, and curses were terrible things, never to be uttered lightly. Now, we curse without thought - but without ramification?

It is very surprising and shocking to see that God asks for the first born son of the man who would build up the city of Jericho again. After all, it was God who approved the destruction of Jericho by His people (Israelites, and God wants to re-build it through them. I assume that God wants obedience and full submission from His people (as He did to Abraham with son Isaac), so that He can use them to carry out His purpose.
