21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25"The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."

These verses remind me of Genesis 14, when Sarah laughs at the angel, who told her that she would bear a child. Similarly, Zechariah does not believe the angel Gabriel's word that his wife would get pregnant and give birth to John the Baptist. Consequently, he becomes mute until his time in the temple is completed, though both of them have been upright in the sight of God until now, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. These verses confirm to us once again that our God has the power and determination to do things that seem to be impossible in our human eyes and minds. We should get reminded how powerful our prayers can, if we truly rely on Him with faith and obedience.
