17. When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "There is the sound of war in the camp."
18. Moses replied: "It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear."
19. When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
20. And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.
21. He said to Aaron, "What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?"
22. "Do not be angry, my lord," Aaron answered. "You know how prone these people are to evil.
23. They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.'
24. So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!"

By the reaction of Joshua, perhaps he wasn't participating in this madness.
It seems Aaron does not realize/understand what he did was such a great sin. Aaron immediately separates himself from these " people" who are prone to evil and saying that he only did what people asked him to do. Such irresponsible response from a leader! What kind of excuse is this? "I gave the people what they wanted even though I kind of knew it was wrong." Does he really think he is separate from others? From who's eyes/judgment is he making this statement? For Aaron has not only led people to create an idol, he has become the idol too by placing himself on the seat of the judge thus seat of the Lord.
Sadly this is the reality we still see today. What is even more disturbing is that I too am no different from Aaron.
As followers of Christ, we have the wisdom and understanding to realize the right from wrong. I pray that I will have the wisdom and the courage to stand against the crowd and lead them back to Christ when I'm faced with such situation. Also, I pray that even my own decision comes down to choosing the path of Christ rather than my own which is the path of evil.
